Rock of Ages, Sands of Time

My preoccupation with the passage of time generated Rock of Ages, Sands of Time, a series of paintings that functions as a visible metaphor for an immense period of time---an eon.
Each of the 544 contiguous panels represents the passage of a million years. Fossil flora and fauna make their appearance in chronological order, and all of the organisms are depicted at true scale. They are embedded in a muted rainbow of colors evoking the geological matrix in which they were found. Geological processes and climate changes are represented metaphorically. Lavish amounts of pigment laden with pumice indicate volcanic upheavals. Enter the Rock of the Ages, Sands of Time Gallery.

I chose the scientific framework to support many layers of artistic issues, including the role of narrative in contemporary painting.
