Rock of Ages, Sands of Time

Paintings by Barbara Page and text by Warren Allmon The University of Chicago Press 2001

Rock of Ages, Sands of Time, a series of paintings that serves as a visual metaphor for an immense period of time, was installed at the Museum of the Earth in Ithaca, NY in 2003. Each of the contiguous 544 panels represents the passage of a million years, spanning the eon between the emergence of visible life on this planet and the present. Fossil flora and fauna, embedded in a colorful geological matrix, make their appearance in chronological order. The book contains color reproductions of the entire sequence and descriptions of the scientific context by paleontologist Warren Allmon.
